For fifteen years I was a professional storyteller educating students from seventh to twelfth grade historical thinking skills and reasoning processes disguised as mind maps comparing River Valley Civilizations, reading abridged plays of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and using socratic seminars to discuss some pretty complicated and mucky topics. I made it a point to expose students to vocabulary, to help them understand the difference between primary and secondary sources, but more importantly I tried my best to engrave in their minds two things. (1) Just because something is written online or printed in a publication doesn’t mean it is true and (2) just because someone shouts louder or makes a bigger stink doesn’t make them correct.
